The Atlas and Its Function<\/h3>\n

The atlas, the first cervical vertebra, together with the second cervical vertebra, the axis, forms the joints connecting the head and the spine. These joints are the most mobile part of the spinal column.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite its small contact surface, on which the head primarily performs nodding movements, the atlas plays an important role in supporting the weight of the head, which is approximately five to seven kilograms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The historical analogy with Atlas, the Titan of Greek mythology who carried the heavens, seems fitting when describing the weight-bearing function of this small vertebra. Unlike the other movable vertebrae of the spine, there is no intervertebral disc between the atlas and the axis. <\/span><\/p>\n

    There are various possible causes of atlas displacement (subluxation):<\/p>\n

    • Blows, falls and accidents<\/li>\n
    • Sleeping on the stomach with the head turned to one side<\/li>\n
    • Physical tension and muscle tightness<\/li>\n
    • Tension in the shoulder and neck area, particularly as a result of sedentary office work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Atlaslogy can also be a beneficial treatment method for infants and children.
